Junior sailing lessons
The club has been offer a very popular set of 9 lessons (from Easter to the end of the school term) to about 30 children. These are instructed by sailing club volunteers. Lessons run for 2.5 hours on either Saturday or Sunday mornings, prior to adult racing in the afternoons, which the more experienced juniors are encouraged to compete in. On the last Sunday in May the Juniors hold their annual Junior regatta to which sailors from surrounding clubs are invited too. Less experienced youngsters sail with adult helpers and instructors in big double handers. The club moves to their base in Stonehaven after the regatta where the remainder of the lessons take place. The aim of the lessons is to have fun sailing. Many of our previous Juniors have gone on to compete at club level, Scottish, National and International events and several are currently part of the Scottish RYA development teams. Other youngsters who have out-grown the lessons volunteer their time as assistant and later dinghy instructors. Many have gone on to teach at commercial sailing schools, both in the UK and abroad.
Parents are expected to help facilitate the lessons by getting involved with teaching, driving safety boats or helping out on land - a great way to share a hobby or learn how to sail.
Registration for lessons opens in February and places are allocated at the beginning of March. Preference is given to returning sailors, but there are always spaces for new sailors too.
email training@asyc.org.uk to get involved.
Junior summer week
Over the summer holidays the juniors, volunteers and parents get together again for 5 days of beach fun in Stonehaven. A great opportunity to try something new and gain RYA certificates. Preference is given to children who are either part of the Junior sailing programme and who compete with the adults.
