History
The club’s access to two sailing sites is the result of a merger in 1969 between two previous clubs, Aberdeen Sailing Club and Stonehaven Yacht Club, creating Aberdeen and Stonehaven Yacht Club.
At Loch of Skene the club has the use of a gothic-style gate-house for Dunecht Estates (above centre), but the main clubhouse and boat parks are located on the harbour front at Stonehaven.
The ASYC clubhouse is situated on the harbour front at Stonehaven, the pink building in the centre of the picture (above right).
There is a small cruising section within the club based in the tidal harbour at Stonehaven, but the bulk of the membership is devoted to dinghy sailing. ASYC has produced a number of Scottish dinghy sailing champions over the years, including catamaran classes, Wayfarer and Fireball.
Rescue cover is provided at both venues by club-owned RIB's, and the club offers RYA training courses in powerboat handling, and operates a junior training programme.
ASYC is run by a membership committee elected at our Annual General Meeting.
Loch of Skene
ASYC sails on the Loch of Skene from March till June courtesy of Dunecht Estates. The Loch of Skene is located approximately 15km west of Aberdeen. It is a shallow (~2m deep) lowland artificial loch with an area of 121 hectares, surrounded by fringing reedbeds and willow. The loch supports an internationally important roost of Icelandic Greylag Goose, as well as Icelandic Whooper Swan. Ospreys are seen on the Loch, and Red Kite have recently been introduced to the area.
The club uses the ground floor of the gatehouse which provides basic changing facilities, toilets and a galley. Dinghies are parked on the grassy shore adjacent to the Loch. Since the water level in the Loch is regulated by a dam, there is no risk of flooding, and boats can be parked just a few metres from the waters edge.

Stonehaven Bay
ASYC sails in Stonehaven Bay from June until November. The 4-storey harbour-side clubhouse at Stonehaven provides gents changing room (including showers and toilets) on the top floor, and ladies changing (including showers and toilets) on the third floor. The galley on the second floor includes a full kitchen and dining area. On the ground floor is a bar and social area.
The club has two dinghy yards plus shed for the storage of boats in both winter and summer. Boats are launched from slipways and the beach within Stonehaven harbour. Sailing is in Stonehaven Bay, just a few minutes from the harbour entrance.
